The rounded Mull of Oa protects the distillery of Ardbeg from the fierce winds, driving rain and eerie coverings of mist that are common on the Islay range. It is this that led to the inspiration for the outstanding Ardbeg An Oa.
Like its name sake Arbeg An Oa is particularly rounded, due to time spent in the gathering vat. Here the whisky is married together from several different casks including PX sherry, new charred oak and first fill bourbon; this is where they become familiar with each other resulting in a master piece.
Colour: Light gold
Nose: Smooth sweetness of creamy toffee and treacle combine with aniseed, citrus notes combine subtly with hints of peaty smoke. A curious suggestion of juicy fruits such as peaches and banana. Fragrant candle wax mingles with hints of smoked herbs. An Oa gives a final subtle reminder of the sea with briny notes and seaweed but always accompanied with creaminess.
Palate: The smoky peaty power is mellowed by the creamy texture and sweet notes of milk chocolate and butterscotch, all perfectly seasoned with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and aniseed. Woody notes are present giving an almost nutty flavour.
Finish: Subtle earth smoke lingers mingling with succulent sweet toffee notes and a hint of the spices Aniseed and hickory.
