Located on the island of Mull off Scotland’s west coast Tobermory is certainly one of Scotland’s distilleries with a foundation date of 1798 the site has had a very intermittent history with multiple owners over the years and prolonged periods of closure. The current owners who are the South African company CVH Spirits, a subsidiary of Heineken

The distillery name has changed over the years between Ledaig and Tobermory, today it is Tobermory Distillery.

Sheltered by Calve Island, the distillery and the village of the same name lies on the eastern side of the island. Tobermory village is regarded by many as one of them most picturesque with its multi-coloured houses and world famous Mishnish Bar.

Noted for its wide and varied wildlife such the White Tailed Sea Eagle, one of Europe’s largest birds alongside numerous sightings of over 15 species of whales and dolphins every year the island is one of the most bio-diverse on the west coast of Scotland. There is even a story of a sunken Spanish galleon from the 18th century that lies in the bay with its cargo of gold as yet unfound.

The distillery lies just to the south of the village on a steep slope heading down towards the shoreline which has caused several problems in the last few years. A great deal of work was done on the building as subsidence became a problem.

The distillery produces three main products, Tobermory Single Malt which is an unpeated whisky, Ledaig (le-ch-ag) which is a peated malt. There is also a small amount of gin produced every year under the Tobermory label.
