Until the beginning of the 2000’s, Mauritian law dating back from the British colonial era enforced distillers to distil at high abv, above 93 %. The island has experienced a true revival and historic distillers have been producing quality aromatic rums ever since for the export market.
Nose - Like a lovely stroll through spice stalls. Black pepper, cumin, rice, starchy notes but also some sweetness with salted caramel aromas
Taste - Well-rounded and fruity. It then develops aromas of red berries (strawberries, gooseberries), then evolves to pure cane juice thus evoking its raw material.
Finish - Surprisingly, despite being nice and easy to begin with, it has quite a bitter finish, giving it a delicious balance.
